Differential Geometric Methods in Low-dimensional Topology
This is a survey of various applications of analytical and geometric techniques to problems in manifold topology. The author has been involved in only some of these developments, but it seems more illuminating not to confine the discussion to these. We begin by recalling the notion of a manifold. Suppose we are provided with a large collection of small paper discs. Then we can construct a wide ...
متن کاملA Topology Preserving Level Set Method for Geometric Deformable Models
Active contour and surface models, also known as deformable models, are powerful image segmentation techniques. Geometric deformable models implemented using level set methods have advantages over parametric models due to their intrinsic behavior, parameterization independence, and ease of implementation. However, a long claimed advantage of geometric deformable models — the ability to automati...
متن کاملA Course in Topology-based Geometric Modeling
The content of a course in Topology-based Geometric Modeling is presented. The key ideas are based upon simplicial notions issued from combinatorial topology. The well adequacy of these notions to geometric patches (such as Bézier patches) is pointed out. Topology and geometric notions are simultaneously presented in order to show their complementarity.
متن کاملSurgery and Geometric Topology
Ideas from the theory of topological stability of smooth maps are trans ported into the controlled topological category For example the controlled topologi cal equivalence of maps is discussed These notions are related to the classi cation of manifold approximate brations and manifold strati ed approximate brations In turn these maps form a bundle theory which can be used to describe neighborho...
متن کاملDifferential Topology
This paper is to propose solutions to selected exercises in Differential Topology by Guillemin and Pollack, [1], and to comment on certain proofs in the book. Although the sections covered in this paper correspond to specific sections in the book, they have been freely renamed to suit the content. The sections of the book which will be covered here are, in order: §6: Homotopy and Stability Appe...
